Who we are
Captain Julie Garland
Head of Training
Capt Garland is former Airline Training Captain, Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, and currently a Barrister at Law specialising in aviation law, a lecturer in Technical Aircraft Management, Human Factors and CRM/TRM and the founding Chair of the Unmanned Aircraft Association of Ireland (UAAI) with over 20 years experience in every aspect of aviation. Julie recognised the need in the market for professional pilot training for commercial Drone Operators and set up RPAS Training International in 2015 in order to ensure the highest possible standards of quality training and safety are attained and maintained in both the ground and flight training of commercial Drone Pilots and Operators.
Julie commenced her career in aviation as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with Team AerLingus and went on to become Line Maintenance Controller with Air Contractors. She then went on to attain her Commercial Pilots Licence and Flight Instructors Rating with National Flight Centre and joined Aer Arann as a First Officer. She progressed to Line Training Captain on the ATR 42/72 and was the company Flight Safety Officer representing Aer Arann nationally and internationally. From Aer Arann Capt Garland was taken as a direct entry Captain on the BAE146/RJ85 with Cityjet based in Paris and then Dublin.
Captain Garland then went on to study to become a Barrister at Law and was called to the Bar of Ireland in 2010 and commenced practice as Julie Garland BL specialising in all areas of Aviation Law. In 2011-2012 she furthered her studies at UCD attaining a Post Graduate Diploma in Arbitration and also completed an approved mediators course and is now a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators with the post-nominal letters of FCIArb CIArb Med.
Julie's interest in drones/RPAS commenced last year when she got a Phantom 2 and realised the potential. The rapid acceleration of the Unmanned Aircraft industry was evident and her legal, flying and engineering background gives an in-depth insight into the barriers the industry may face unless proper training and the highest safety standards are being met. She set up the RPAS Flight Training division of the National Flight Centre and because of the demand and specialised nature of the training has now established Avtrain which is dedicated to training fixed wing, single and multi rotor drone Pilots and Operators to the highest possible standards. Due to her background Capt Garland is also ideally placed to give advice, guidance and consultation of all aspects of Drone Operations.RPAS Training International was purchased by Thunder Tiger Aviation in 2017 and now in 2019 has been reformed as Avtrain under new management.
She is also very personable and likes to chat!
